Safe and well-functioning vascular anastomoses are essential in the daily practice of vascular surgery, cardiac surgery, transplantation surgery, as well as in reconstructive procedures, including microsurgical approaches. The regeneration of artificial vascular anastomoses, especially the maturation of fistulas and vein grafts, is strongly influenced by hemodynamic forces driven by flow characteristics.

Hence, the investigation of hemorheological and hemodynamic conditions is inevitable for a better understanding of the physiology and pathophysiology of vascular anastomoses regeneration and graft implantation. The main aspects and findings of experimental surgical and microsurgical models are summarized from the last decade, studying artificial arteriovenous fistulas, portocaval shunts and various grafts using in vivo measurements, hemorheological and hemodynamic investigations, as well as special 3D flow simulation studies of ex vivo vascular segments.
